Rush
is the process where interested students learn about the fraternity and meet the Brothers of Kappa Sigma. Everyone is encouraged to rush, but you can only pledge if you have more than 12 credits. Rush is all year round, and we have many fun and free events you can attend. We are completely no-hazing fraternity.

College is a great learning experience not just academically, but personally and socially.

Almost all students will graduate as very different people from the high school seniors they were.  In this transition, it is important to have a close network of friends that you can count on, a range of leadership opportunities to build your resume and practice core skills, and it’s also important to have some fun.

Greek life is one way to make the most of your college experience, and Kappa Sigma is the premier fraternity at Ship as shown by the “Triple Crown” – Fraternity of the Year 2007, 2008, and 2009. This is why we chose as our Fall 2009 theme “Raising the Standard”.

The foundation of our fraternity rests on our four values which we incorporate throughout our chapter:

Fellowship
– The primary benefit of fraternity membership is the creation of close lifelong friends. Our Brothers are also our closest friends. Throughout the school year and summer we have brotherhood events like camping or Hooter’s, socials and date parties with sororities, sports games, and parties –indeed there is never a dull moment in our chapter.  At our Founder’s Day, we are reminded of the strength of our Brotherhood when alumni come back to visit the chapter. Some bring their families and encourage their sons to pledge.

Leadership
– Kappa Sigma is a great place to build your resume and gain leadership skills and experiences. Inside the fraternity we have a five-member Executive Committee and chairs for managing the chapter such as fundraising, rush, community service, finance, social, and more. Outside of the chapter our Brothers have shown amazing imitative in campus leadership  and Raised the Standard.  A few of our recent achievements include:

  • 2008 Greek Man of the Year
  • 2008 Best New Fraternity Member
  • 2009 Senators for Greek Life, Non-Traditional Students, and the College of Business
  • 2008 Senior and Junior Senators
  • 2008 IFC President
  • 2008 Director of Up Till Dawn

Service – It is important to remember that we are not simply college students, but citizens of our communities. We do multiple community service events throughout the year and in the summer and we have consistently won awards for our participation in community service.  Past events include Up Till Dawn, Relay for Life, Children’s Fair, the BIG Event, and Chilli Cook-off.

Scholarship
– First and foremost, college is about your education. To help you earn better grades, we have Brothers who tutor each other in their majors and a collection of textbooks and notes that many find useful. Our new scholarship program is another way in which we continue to Raise the Standard for greek life at SHIP.
